painted lines, covered plains is a duo show by Sufian Samsiyar and Victoria Tan. Using various vestiges of construction sites, showrooms and locales within Singapore, the works become manifestations of these transitions, temporal ruins and desires. A combination of photographic works and site-specific installation, painted lines, covered plains proposes detached views of the constant impermanent landscape of Singapore.

In 1993, avant-garde artist Marcel Duchamp made a reference to the bachelor machine as a jumble of mechanical implements and schematic diagrams. In the exhibition, the bachelor of this art-historical definition becomes the “bachelorette”, echoing the song written and released by Björk in 1997.

Inspired by the artistic concept of the bachelor machine, the exhibition highlights the ideas and physical labour of these artists’ work.

Undescribed is an annual platform conceived to present out local emerging voices with the hope of supporting the next generation of image-makers. In this edition, six young artists from various art academies showcase their new explorations in the medium of photography with prints, video, and installation. Undescribed aptly labels the “unknown” stage in the life of these young creators, a period of potential and experimentation.

The selection is made by SP Tan, chairman of DECK advisory board, Robert Zhao Renhui, visual artist, and Gwen Lee, director of DECK.
